What is Super Visa Insurance?

Moving to a new country and away from your loved ones can be difficult and distressing. That is why Canada has immigration options to help those separated from their families over long periods of time. One of those options is the Super Visa program.

A Super Visa is provided to parents or grandparents of citizens or permanent residents of Canada. It is a Visa that allows them to stay when they visit their children or grandchildren. This is a multi-entry visa that can last up to 10 years.

Super Visa insurance is a requirement to apply for a super visa. Please note that proof of Canadian medical insurance with coverage for a period at least one year and with a minimum coverage amount of $100,000 for healthcare, hospitalization, and repatriation needs to be submitted while applying for this visa.

Super Visa Insurance is a medical insurance policy that provides coverage for visiting parents and grandparents. This makes it an ideal option for parental sponsorship. This insurance can be purchased for a term of 1 to 2 years or for the entire duration of the visitor’s stay in Canada, depending on your requirements.

What are the criteria to apply for Super Visa Insurance?

In order to apply for Super Visa insurance, the host should have a suitable income and be in a sound financial situation for 3 consecutive years prior to the application. The application will also have to include a notice of assessment by the CRA.

What does a Super Visa Insurance cover?

This insurance plan provides medical coverage for parents and grandparents of citizens or permanent residents of Canada and typically covers:

  • Emergency medical care
  • Hospital care
  • Emergency dental care
  • Diagnostic services
  • Prescription medication
  • Medical evacuation
  • Repatriation of remains
  • Travel assistance

There are also special coverages offered depending on the policy chosen. Some policies can also provide additional insurance for non-emergency medical expenses such as eye exams.

Since every policy is different, it is advisable to read through every policy carefully before choosing one that benefits you.

Documents to be submitted along with the application

A positively framed and worded invitation by the host to the family members intending to visit should be enclosed with the application. Proof of identity proof and other required legal documents should also be mentioned in the letter.

Please note that this insurance must be purchased prior to your visitors’ planned arrival.
